GOLF:
FORMER Werneth captain John Yemm produced a first-nine birdie blitz to shoot an incredible 62 gross for a 55 nett winning total in the club’s second Fairway Cup qualifier.
The seven-handicapper, who was captain of the club in 2005, made birdies at 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 to be seven under par stood on the 11th tee,
“I could not believe what was happening," said a stunned Yemm.
"I was not driving it particularly well, but I was getting my irons on to the greens and all the putts were going in."
Yemm said the pressure of such an amazing run got to him a bit and he bogeyed the 11th and 13th before recovering well with a birdie at the last for a round to remember. His previous best was a level-par 68.
On an amazing day for scoring, teenager Jack Suttie also carded a 62-3-59. He had the current course record 61 in his sights, needing a birdie on the last to set a new low mark only to make a bogey five and miss out on a card play-off.
And you have to feel for scratch player Paul Rowbotham who carded a fine five-under 63 — yet didn’t even make the prizes!
