Springbank storm to cup success

BOWLS:

SPRINGBANK ‘A’ produced a fine team display to win the Saddleworth League’s Law Swallow Cup at Nimble Nook.

They defeated High Crompton Park by 63 chalks in the semi-finals and followed up with a 27-chalks victory over Crompton ‘A’ in the final.


WATERLOO and Taunton’s Paul Leah reached the finals of next Sunday’s Moorside Classic with a 21-16 defeat of Merseyside’s Robbie Fitzpatrick.


BARRIE Clark and Brian Biggins (Springbank) won the Oldham and District Veterans League’s Jack Fitton pairs, beating Stewart Bentley and Denis Lord (North Chadderton) 21-12 in the final at Tonge.

Quarter-finals: John Wolfenden and John Lockwood (Dobcross), Bentley and Lord 21; Ken Fletcher and Alf Smallwood (Nimble Nook) 21, Brian Yates and Stewart Crabtree (Crompton) 20; Wilf McDermott and Tommy Gowers (Springbank) 10, Colin Bradbury and Bob Carr (Springhead) 21; Alan Bidwell and Wilf Flanagan (Springbank) 17, Barrie Clark and Brian Biggins (Springbank) 21.

Semi-finals: Bentley and Lord 21, Fletcher and Smallwood 14; Bradbury and Carr 19, Clark and Biggins 21.


GREATER Manchester women lost their County Championship semi-final despite winning by 45 chalks in the home leg at Wigan.

The away green at Solihull proved their downfall as they went down by 76 for an overall defeat by 31 chalks.

Karen Houlston (21-20) fared best of the local women, although Janelle Pertoldi (19-21) and Alma Tickle (18-21) can be satisfied with their performances.


THE Dr Kershaws women’s pairs competition has been given a boost with the donation by Taylors Removals of Saddleworth of a set of bowls.

Tickets for the raffle for the bowls are available from Christine Griffiths, Alice Hollas and June Taylor (Delph) and Kath Jackson (Shaw BL).

The draw will take place on the day of the competition at Hollinwood Cricket Club on Sunday, September 5.
