Williams puts the record straight

SWING KING . . . Paul Williams shows of the Centenary Trophy he won on his home course.
GOLF: THERE must be something about the Centenary Trophy that brings out the best of Werneth’s Paul Williams.
Last season he finished runner-up to Gary Melling and this year he went one better to claim the final Oldham and District trophy of the season on his home course.
Immaculate greens and a sunny day looked like perfect scoring conditions but Williams, a 38-year-old engineer from High Crompton, won with a 76-12-64 return.
“I knew I had a decent score going and birdied the 17th with a seven-iron to two feet,” said Paul.
“But I still thought 64 was nowhere near enough after the very low scores that have been posted over the last few weeks.”
But the wind turned later in the day and made scoring difficult — nobody broke the two-under par standard scratch of 66 in the afternoon.
So Paul clinched his first major success in three seasons at the Garden Suburb course after a card play-off against Crompton and Royton’s Peter Meggison.
