FOOTBALL: DERBY day on the opening afternoon of the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League season saw Royton Town earn the bragging rights with a 1-0 win at Hollinwood’s Chapel Road home.
It wasn’t the start new Hollinwood manager Fred Hardicre, who has replaced Paul Bennett in the hot seat, wanted as his side looks to improve on last season's disappointing 10th-placed finish in the Premier Division.
Hollinwood old boy Alan Beckett scored the only goal for Royton Town.
Hardicre’s boys also went down 5-3 at Dukinfield Town.
Royton were unable to follow up on their opening day victory when they lost their second game 3-2 to Manchester Gregorians.
Town opened the scoring early on through Michael Moss.
But the defence fell asleep when Gregorians swung in a corner to notch a relatively soft equaliser.
Just before the interval the hosts restored their lead, Moss playing in Dean, who made no mistake.
Sloppy play saw Gregorians equalise for the second time.
Another mix-up from a corner saw Gregorians find the winner.
Springhead began their campaign with an entertaining 3-3 draw at Dukinfield, before
roaring to a 3-0 triumph at East Manchester.
