Ineligibility claim leaves cup place in jeopardy

CRICKET: SHAW are set to lose their place in next season’s LCB Cup.
The Holebottom Clough outfit, which clinched the last qualifying spot with victory over Glodwick on the final day of the season, is facing a points deduction for allegedly fielding an ineligible player.
Opener batsman James Ormerod only appeared on the Shaw teamsheet in three games, two in the final two days of the season.
Saddleworth and District Cricket Leagues rules say a registered player can only play in any of the last three games of the campaign if he has featured at least twice previously in that season.
Ormerod, who was signed from Accrington, was down to play against Greenfield on August 7 — the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled — but didn’t feature again until September 5 (v Stayley). He also played a week later against Glodwick.
However, Shaw would lose every point gained from the last two matches — 40 in total — if, as seems likely, they are found to have broken league rules.
It would mean Shaw would drop to seventh in the table, with Droylsden moving up to fifth place, putting Michael Schofield’s side in the hat for the LCB Cup first round draw.
It could have a knock-on effect with regard to a Saddleworth League competition.
Glodwick just missed out on the Brennand Aggregate Trophy and league officials need to decide if they should be awarded the points, likewise Stayley, because of Shaw’s supposed indiscretion. Because of this uncertainty, the final division one standings have been withheld.
