Goals galore in trophy ties

FOOTBALL:

WEAVERS won 9-4 at fellow David Giblin Division One outfit Anglers Arms in the Oldham Sunday League Presidents’ Trophy, with four goals from T Lord, an A Biggins hat-trick, and efforts from D Gill and S Edge.

P Naylor hit three and C Hanson also found the net for the hosts.

Division Three team Old Grey Mare gave Jack Abbott Premier Division side Red Star a run for their money but were beaten 2-1.

S Laurell and D Greenough got Red Star’s goals, with D Morgan replying.

W Berry and G Chadderton scored two each as Division One’s Limeside Athletic ‘A’ saw off Rifle Range Tangerines, from the division below, 7-0. N Buckley, C McKenzie and W Ware completed the rout.

Failsworth Athletic of the Premier Division roared to a 6-1 triumph at Division Two’s Manor FC.

There were braces from J Lees and M Olive. G Billington and C Cooper put the icing on the cake for the visitors, while L Glasgow notched their opponents’ consolation goal.

Elsewhere R Higginbotham was on target for Division Two outfit Springhead ‘B’ but they lost 5-1 at home to Premier Division side Rifle Range Reds, for whom J Knapman scored twice, on top of efforts from M Jackson, N Eastmond and J Jacobs.

J Moss and K Bennett did the damage for Highfield United of Division One in their

2-1 win over Royton Athletic, who play their football a division below United.

Khartoum ‘B’ saw off Division Three rivals Shaw Rovers 6-0.

Premier Division action saw reigning champions Khartoum ‘A’ lose 4-1 at Royton FC.

R Quinlan notched a hat-trick and W Dean also scored for Royton.

D Kay scored a brace and D Mullholland was on target for High Crompton in a 3-3 draw with Oddies Athletic, whose marksmen were N Dawson, T Taylor and R Hall.

Chaddy End defeated FC Carsons 5-2.


In Division Six South, Chadds ‘B’ beat Oldham Hulmeians ‘B’ 4-2, with Adam Flint, Tom Waldron, John Adlington and Rick Johnson on target.



Wasted chances cost Uppermill

UPPERMILL earned a 2-2 draw at Cumberworth in the Huddersfield League Division One.

In a first half dominated by Uppermill for long periods, two quality headed goals from Ventriss put Uppermill in control.

In both cases quality crosses from Mooney were met by powerful back post headers by Ventriss. Playing some great attacking football Uppermill could have reached half time with further goals but couldn’t add to their tally.

The game changed completely in the second-half, when two mistakes from Uppermill led to Cumberworth getting back on level terms.

The first was from a Cumberworth free kick that wasn’t cleared and the second when possession was lost in midfield and a great run by a Cumberworth forward was well finished.

Uppermill lost 2-1 at home to Cumberworth in the Reserves Division One, with Phil Austin scoring the consolation goal.

There was better news for the third team in Reserves Division Two, after they roared to a 6-2 victory at the expense of New Mills.

Heyside continued their good start to the Reserves Division Two campaign with a 7-0 win at Mount reserves.

Reserves Division Four action saw Uppermill’s fifth team beat Netherton 5-1.


Lomas leaves it late to rescue Peels Arms

PEELS Arms rescued a point in the Rochdale Alliance Division One in a 1-1 with Whitworth Valley seconds at New Barn, Shaw.

Top scorer Michael Rowlatt missed Peels’ best chance of the first half, shooting wide from close range.

Whitworth's physical presence caused the home team problems and they were lucky to go in level at half time, Whitworth having a goal ruled out for offside.

Peels continued to struggle in the second half and it was no surprise when Whitworth took the lead. Andrew Simpson's reckless tackle allowing Whitworth to score from the spot.

Peels were thankful to Wayne Ankers, who pulled off a string of fine saves to keep them in the game.

With moments remaining Rowlatt's deflected shot fell into the path of Ash Lomas and he buried the equaliser.


Cup run beckons for 10-man Santos
SANTOS are through to the next round of the Lancashire Amateur Cup after beating AFC Royton 1-0 away.

A right wing corner from Marsh found Buxton, whose unstoppable header flew in to the net.

Santos, who lost Fraser to a red card for retaliation after the break, travel to Adelphi in the next round.
