Marathon man Ian McBride
ATHLETICS: IAN McBride became the first member of Royton Road Runners to win a road race when he surged to an emphatic victory in the Fleetwood Marathon.
McBride, who had never taken part in a marathon before his success, battled through 72mph seafront winds to complete the course in two hours, 55 minutes and 19 seconds.
He left the rest of the field trailing by almost five minutes, and his time was within a minute of Stuart Carroll’s club record of 2:54.41, posted at the London Marathon.
“I have only been with the club for five weeks and am not used to running that distance, so I was happy to get the win,” said McBride, who lives in High Crompton.
