TABLE TENNIS: HOLLINWOOD ‘B’ produced the performance of the week in the Oldham Table Tennis League’s First Division when they beat their higher-ranked ‘A’ team 6-4.
Nathan Buckley, star of the show with a treble, was ably supported by Matty Evans (two wins)
Saddleworth ‘A’ registered a 6-4 victory over MC & MA. Tristran Swan won three times for the Ms, including five-set defeats of league champion Paul Cichelli and Darren Lindley. Colin Boardman was particularly unlucky not to win, having had a match point against Lindley.
Division Two title favourites Hyde YMCA ‘A’ beat Honeywell ‘D’, league chairman Ken Dunkerley supplying both of Honeywell's points with defeats of Lionel Royle and Geoff Ogden. Ken Ward was undefeated for Hyde.
Hyde ‘B’ drew 5-5 at Werneth ‘D’ for whom Colin Pellowe won his first match at this level.
Mick Pellowe won three times for Werneth and Dennis Bradshaw two for Hyde.
Alex Griffiths and new boy Gary Owen both scored maximums for Saddleworth ‘B’ in their 7-3 win over Honeywell ‘E’.
Grotton ‘B’ had a hard-fought 6-4 win against Deaf Club ‘B’, Neil Tomlinson leading the way with maximum points.
He was backed up by two wins from Steve Smith, while Matt Garside played well in winning a couple for Deaf.
Our Lady's ‘A’ had a 10-0 win over Coppice in the Fourth Division, but many games went to deuce and the doubles matches, in particular, could have gone either way.
Two new teams, Blue Coat and Dobcross, fought out a 5-5 draw. Dave Bottomley's treble was nullified by doubles from Stephen and Chris Smith.
