GOLF: BROOKDALE assistant professional Grant Hamerton finished joint second behind David Shacklady in the Lancashire PGA Championship at Accrington.
Hamerton (37) had successive rounds of 69 for an excellent total of 138, a score matched by Hough-wood’s Barry Taylor. But neither player could strike a blow at Shacklady (Mossock Hall), who won by six shots thanks to rounds of 63 and 69.
MEANWHILE lady-captain Sue Boothby teamed up with fellow Brookdale member Julie Pickering and Werneth’s Jane Clark to score 70 Stableford points and win the Oldham Ladies’ Golf Association’s Joan Hirst Cup.
The annual charity day took place in tough conditions at Brookdale, but still raised £500 which was presented to the Meningitis Trust.
Runners-up, on a card play-off, were Pauline Givvons, Audrey Whittaker and Noreen Nicholson (Crompton and Royton) with 63 points. Marjorie Bray, Wendy Cash and Linda Bailey (Oldham) finished third.
