PREPARATIONS are well under way for the biggest darts tournament to be staged in the town.

The Oldham Open, with prize-money pool of £2,500, will be staged at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Saturday, October 23.

Leading players from Lancashire and beyond are set to converge on the borough for the day-long darts extravaganza.

The winner will receive £1,200, with the runner-up claiming £600 and the losing semi-finalists each netting £100.

The woman who goes the furthest in the competition will also pick up £100 for her efforts.

The venue will feature 16 dart boards, and there will be Lancashire and BDO ranking points on offer, so a high quality field is expected.

Early-round matches start at 501 and are best of five legs, with the semi-finals best of seven and the final nine.

Players can enter on the day or at Treble Board and Trophies on Yorkshire Street, Oldham, for a fee of £10.

Registration is from 9am until noon, with the action on the oche getting under way at 1pm. Entry for spectators is £2, with under-16s free.

OLDHAM are away to Little Holton in the Lancashire GMC Super Eights Elite Super League on Sunday. Players meet at the Flower Pot (11am).
