Angling: JACK Cubby emerged victorious in the Lees and Hey AS match on the Benson’s Creek Lake at Fir Tree Fisheries, Appley Bridge, near Wigan.

Using the long pole and worm at 12 metres, he caught golden tench, carp, skimmers, roach and just about every other species for a 29lb 14oz bag.

Steve Blackburn was second-best, with pellet down the side of a reedbed tempting a similar net of 14lb 15oz.

Steve Orr is enjoying his best season for some time, and he was again in the frame with his catmeat approach netting a 4lb barbel and plenty of small carp and skimmers for 14lb 10oz.

Jim Wild was fourth with a 9lb 7oz mixed bag.

PETE Cuniffe, of Gilders, was fourth in the Bradshaw Fisheries open thanks to 14lb 6oz of silvers on hemp and caster.

JEFF Coulter dominated the Blundells Fisheries’ open on Ash, Pine and West lakes.

The Tight Lines rod adopted a positive approach, and it paid off with a massive 128lb 3oz of mainly carp.

Runner-up John Kerwin (Bury) was way adrift with 73lb 4oz, while Stuart Green was third (64lb 4oz).

THE Meadow View open matches always provide excellent sport and this Wednesday’s event was no different.

Conrad Taylor (Gilders) has plenty of wins and placings to his name at the venue, and he was again in the shake-up with his corn and pellet approach down the side netting a super 76lb 12oz of decent-sized carp.

THE Rochdale Canal at the back of the Rose of Lancaster pub is a real gem.

In just a few hours, I bagged double figures of roach and skimmers, with bread punch at seven and 11 metres attracting a fish every put in. My best skimmer was in the 1lb 8oz bracket, while I was landing roach to 12oz.

The water is virtually free of anglers, so give it a try, and you’ll be amazed at the quality of the fishing.

Venue Guide

Park Lake: With the weather cooling down, maggot is attracting the majority of fish. Bread punch is worth a go as the water is full of roach and skimmers. Day tickets available.

Huddersfield Narrow Canal: Slaithwaite areas best for some cracking fishing. Big carp and bream to worm and caster. Plenty of chub, roach and skimmers to pinkie and maggot. Day tickets available on bank.

Rochdale Canal: Rose of Lancaster area for great fishing. Plenty of roach and skimmers showing to bread punch.

Chadderton Mill lodge: Lots of fish on all types of bait.

Twingates: Top and bottom lodges fishing well with mixed bags on both. Most baits enticing fish. Members only.
