GOLF: OLDHAM claimed the team trophy in the Oldham and District Captain’s end-of-season weekend, played on the championship courses at Slaley Hall.
Their quartet of Ian McLoughlin, Colin Hare, Martin Lewis and Barry Lewis pipped Saddleworth by a single point over the two-day Stableford challenge.
That made them the third name on the trophy in three years after Crompton and Royton landed the inaugural event at Woodhall Spa in 2008 and Saddleworth won last year at Belton Woods.
Saddleworth’s Nigel Cooper and John Knight took the first-day prize with 36 points on the testing Hunting course — on a card play-off from McLoughlin and Martin Lewis.
And Brookdale’s Mark Leigh and Ray Deacon were victors in windy conditions on the Priestman course with 37 points, ahead of Werneth’s Quentin Cartwright and John Suttie (35).
In the subsidiary competition, Werneth’s vice-captain elect Lee Rowbotham picked up day prizes alongside Joe Loughman and Paul Cain, and the team honours with Cain, Loughman and Jim Garside.
LILY Bevins, Pat Grant and Christine Moon teamed up to win a three-ball Alliance at Werneth with 42 points.
Sylvia Dempster, Fiona Dooley and Lomas won the first sweep with 41, while 40 points secured the second sweep for Hilda Garner, Sue Green and Marianne Pickford.
