AMATEUR RUGBY: HOLLINWOOD cruised into the Standard Cup semi-finals after a 24-0 victory at Whitworth Spartans.
It was the best performance of the season so far from Hollinwood, who are also riding high in Pennine League Division Five.
The tackling was first class as Spartans, unbeaten in the league, were never allowed to get into their stride.
Pete Jackson crashed over the line to open the scoring, with Andy Gorey adding the extras.
Gorey converted Warren Taylor’s solo effort and a Rob Penswick try in the corner as Hollinwood went in 18-0 up at the break.
Spartans never looked like getting back into the tie, despite their impressive league form, which has seen them win every match so far this season.
Phil Bell raced 30 metres to go under the posts, and Gorey completed a 100-per-cent success rate for his goal kicking — an achievement which earned him the man-of-the-match award.
Props Penswick and Phil Baxter looked good, while the second-row partnership of Jackson and Matty McCullough covered a lot of ground. There was also a welcome return from injury for Pat Jennings.
