Wasted chances prove costly

FURNESS 23

WASTED chances proved Oldham’s downfall once again as they remained rooted to bottom sport in North Lancs and Cumbria Division.

Twice the ball was knocked forward with the try-line beckoning, while Rob Froggatt was through on the wing only to have his ankles tapped when looking certain to score.
Furness, on the other hand, took the chances which came their way following some good running which stretched the Oldham defence.

The home side started the game with Alan Pierre at prop after two regulars in that position failed fitness checks.

Oldham’s pack took time to settle, but gained ground with several drives, held the line-outs and took the game to the visitors.

But it was Furness who grabbed the led with a Darren Holt penalty after three minutes before Mark Goodman replied for Oldham.

Two more Holt penalties made it 9-3 at half-time, but Goodman replied again in the 47th minute before a Darren Pike try for Furness was converted by the accurate Holt.

Nick Beach scored Furness’s second try, again converted by Holt, to make it 23-6, but Oldham had chances of their own with Froggatt missing out and the outstanding Gareth Barber lacking support on the break.

Oldham finally crossed the line when Nick Hackman dived over - Goodman converting - but try as they might the Manor Park men could not produce another score which would at least have given them a bonus point.

Oldham have no game this Saturday, but travel to Keswick the following week.
