JOHN MAXSON
THE Oldham Referees’ Association is mourning the death of its president and secretary, John Maxson.
John, who died suddenly at the age of 69, was due to receive life membership of the National Referees’ Association in recognition of his 40 years service to refereeing.
He is survived by sons Peter and Steven, and brother David.
Peter, who is chairman of the Oldham Referees Association, said: “My dad loved being a part of the association. Over the years he had a number of roles.
“We were about to give him an award for his dedication to the cause.
“He took up refereeing at a young age and, after gaining the necessary qualifications, he became a member.
“He was a Football League linesman from 1975 to 1983. The highlight of that period was when he ran the line in the Merseyside derby.
“Dad was also linesman in the Liverpool v Swansea game a week after Bill Shankly’s death, and was stood next to John Toshack who played for Swansea, but who wore a Liverpool shirt for the minute’s silence.
“Dad became a committee member and chairman of this association, as well as a member of the national association, and was passionate about his contribution.
“I watched him at matches as a child, and he inspired me to get into refereeing. I am proud to have followed in his footsteps.”
