RUGBY LEAGUE
HIGGINSHAW, with key players still missing, lost 26-16 at home to Langworthy Reds in Division Three of the Kukri North-West Counties League.
In an outstanding game, Higgy created enough opportunities to register a third win of the season.
But, for the second game in a row, they failed to turn pressure into points.
Higgy spent the last 10 minutes camped on the Langworthy line, but hopes of victory were dashed after they conceded a third interception try in consecutive matches.
Mark Ward, Sean Stubbs and Scott Foote were exceptional for Higgy, who went in front through debutant winger Jack Hughes.
The hosts succumbed to the sucker punch when they let Langworthy hit back immediately with a converted try. Langworthy then went over twice in quick succession for a 16-4 lead.
But Higgy responded on the stroke of half-time when a break involving Gareth Brindley, Steven Perry and Guy Harvey set up loose forward Scott Foote to dart in under the posts. Jonathan Fullalove added the conversion.
Higgy’s Darryl Renshaw was held up short of the line just after the break, before Langworthy extended their advantage.
The home side refused to throw in the towel, and got back in the game with a converted try from Michael Smith.
Trailing by four points, Higgy chucked everything at their opponents.
But it was Langworthy who broke away to seal victory after the ball bounced in their favour.
Higgy pounded the Langworthy line, with Gareth Brindley and another new-boy Darryl McLean all being stopped on the line, but it wasn’t to be.
In Division One, Oldham St Anne’s ‘A’ dropped to the bottom of the table after a disappointing 32-12 defeat at fellow strugglers Bold Miners.
good fight
Fitton Hill Bulldogs put a good fight in a 20-3 defeat at home to Folly Lane ‘A’ in Division Six.
A penalty and drop goal by Eddie Aspin put the Bulldogs in front at the break, but Lane responded after the interval with two converted tries for a 12-3 lead.
The hosts never gave up, with young forwards Aaron Burrows, Jack Donbavand and Carl Gemmell working hard alongside experienced player Paul Brassington.
Bulldogs were still in the game with 10 minutes to go, only for Lane to record a converted try against the run of play. They also added a late penalty.
