TABLE TENNIS: WERNETH ‘B’ and Honeywell ‘B’ were engaged in a ding-dong battle in the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.
Six of the matches went to a deciding set, but it was Werneth who emerged victorious by virtue of a 6-4 scoreline.
Gary Skinner produced a classy display to win three for Werneth.
Honeywell ‘A’ succumbed 6-4 in a tight encounter with BAE ‘A’, for whom Tony Smith was excellent in clinching three wins.
Dave Buckley registered two victories for Honeywell and would have claimed a third but for Smith recovering from two sets down to win 3-2.
In Division Two, Hyde YMCA ‘A’ moved to the top of table after wins over Droylsden (7-3) and Werneth ‘D’ (6-4).
The Hyde players won two singles each in both of the matches and that strength in depth should see an instant return to the top flight.
Last season’s other relegated team, Werneth ‘C’, climbed to second place courtesy of an 8-2 defeat of basement boys Hollinwood ‘D’. Evergreen Bernard Davies won three for Werneth.
