SWIMMING: WATER way to make an impression!

Alex Crossland-Robins bagged 11 medals from as many races at the Junior Open Swimming Championships in Harrogate.

The Royton Swimming Club member (10) brought home one silver medal, three bronze and seven runners-up — awarded to those who finish from fourth to eighth place.

Dad David said: “Alex is so committed and focused on what he does, so I am delighted for him.

“He performed brilliantly against very difficult opposition.”

Alex’s splashing success resulted in an invitation to Oldham Aquatics’ advanced training squad.

The St Anne’s, Royton, pupil is in the pool seven times a week.

“He trains from 5.30am to 7.30am on a Wednesday — I don’t know where he gets all this energy from,” said David.

“Alex will soon be competing in an event for Oldham, but he will still remain with Royton as well.”

Alex’s silver success came in the 200 metres butterfly. His bronzes were earned in the 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley.

He finished fourth in 200m and 400m freestyle, fifth in 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley, seventh in 50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke, and eighth in 200m breaststroke, which all resulted in runners-up medals.

David added: “The races saw Alex up against swimmers almost a year older than him, so it was a great achievement.”
