Hollinwood make sure with second-half show

RUGBY: HOLLINWOOD returned to winning ways in Division Five of the Pennine League — but without reaching the heights of recent weeks.

They defeated basement boys King Cross Park ‘A’ 42-6, yet the match was in the balance at the midway point.

Hollinwood missed John Byram through injury, but young Gareth Benias did well standing in at loose forward.

Tries by Lee Bayliss, Andy Gorey and Benias — all converted by Gorey — put Hollinwood 18-6 in front at the break.

King, from Halifax, were still in the game at this stage, and the home side had to be wary of a fightback.

It did not materialise as first Warren Taylor put the ball down under the posts.

Gorey added the goal and he was soon taking aim again after Peter Jackson went over.

As the visitors began to tire, Peter Davies raced in 30 yards to score. He doubled his tally moments later, with Gorey converting both to finish with a 100-per-cent record.

Gorey was good. As well as completing seven out of seven, he dictated play all over the park.

The victory leaves Hollinwood in fifth place, eight points adrift of pacesetters Slaithwaite ‘A’.
