Diggle 2, Uppermill 1
AMATEUR FOOTBALL: Richard Devy's Diggle side secured a confident 2-1 victory over local rivals Uppermill at Churchill playing fields in Huddersfield and District League Division One.

Diggle are now up to second place and manager Devy, who replaced Steve Southern as manager at the start of this season, said: "After a home defeat in our last match there was no better game to go into than a local derby.

"It was a full-blooded derby as you would expect and nobody wanted to give any ground."

A goalless first half was even and entertaining, but the game opened up five minutes after the restart.

The Uppermill defence failed to deal with a Wayne Broadbent cross, allowing Ashley Simpson the simplest of chances to score from six yards out.

But plucky Uppermill were level within five minutes when Dave Taylor curled a 20-yard free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

The winning goal came midway through the second period, when Jeff Whittaker, who netted 30 goals in his first season at Diggle last term, scored from the spot after a foul by Uppermill goalkeeper Paul Waterhouse.

NEW Uppermill manager Simon Tait is aiming high, after replacing Paul Waterhouse.
Tait (43), is determined to take the club to a higher level.

He said: "We are building a squad capable of playing at a higher level of football.

"We are aiming to be in the North-West Counties League or similar and we are doing a lot of work with West Riding County FA.”

Uppermill run 30 teams at all age levels, for males and females, and have reached FA Charter standard, and there is a feelgood factor around the place.
