Athletics: JET-HEELED Adam Howard clinched victory in the 3k McCain Liverpool Cross-Challenge at Sefton Park.
The Oldham and Royton Harriers star (15) held off the challenge of runner-up Matthew Shirling, of St Helens, to take first place in the under-15s category, in nine minutes, five seconds.
Adam said: “It’s fantastic to win in Liverpool, at the top of my age group, having come second in last year’s event.
“My family comes to every single race and it’s amazing support to have them around the finish line.”
Mum Louise added: “Adam was hoping to win, but he knew it would not be easy as he was up against roughly 120 runners, in a strong field.
“He is mates with Matthew, who was second, and it is a friendly rivalry which is good, because it spurs on both of them.
“They finished quite far ahead of the rest of the competitors.”
Adam was due to race in the Red Rose League in Bolton last weekend, but snow and ice put paid to the meeting.
The teenager returns to Red Rose League action on Saturday, December 18, in Blackburn.
