TABLE TENNIS: BAE ‘A’ are on course for a runners-up spot behind Glodwick in Division One of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.
They surged up the table with emphatic 9-1 wins 9-1 over Saddleworth CC and Honeywell ‘B’, followed by a 10-0 defeat of basement team Coldhurst ‘A’.
Saddleworth had a ding-dong battle with MC & MA, which ended in a 5-5 draw.
Tristran Swan lost his 100-per-cent record to Saddleworth’s Ian McLean and Paul Cicchelli, but team-mates Ian Quinn and Colin Boardman won two apiece. Cicchelli was unbeaten on the night.
In Division Two, Uppermill ‘A’ went down 7-3 to promotion rivals Honeywell ‘C’.
Mark Simpson was superb with three victories for Uppermill, but his efforts were in vain against the Honeywell team of Peter Buckley, Brian Higgins and Howard Travis, who all posted doubles.
Grotton ‘B’ maintained their push for promotion in Division Three with an 8-2 defeat of Deaf Club ‘B’.
Steve Smith and Neil Tomlinson registered trebles for Grotton, while Dave Varney and Mike Briggs won one each for the Deaf Club.
In Division Four, Our Lady’s ‘B’ fought out a 5-5 draw with Hollinwood ‘E’, for whom Adam Newton scored a sparkling treble.
He was ably supported by Bobby Crossley (double). Callum Allman also won two for Our Lady’s.
There was another close encounter at Coldhurst, where the ‘E’ team went down 6-4 to Owls ‘B’.
Colin Ogden, for the Owls, bagged a treble and team-mate Dave Stanton a double. Andy Pogson replied with a brace for Coldhurst.
