Cup woe for Waterhead

RUGBY LEAGUE:
KEIRAN Grennan’s try and a goal by Sean Garrett were in vain as Waterhead, from the National Conference League, exited the Standard Cup last night.
Salford outfit Folly Lane, from the North-West Counties League Division One, ran out 17-6 winners in a game played under lights at the home of Saddleworth Rangers ARLFC.
The result hands Folly Lane a home tie in the semi-finals against Higginshaw, also from the NWCL.
Elements take their toll
DRIVING rain and strong winds made a mockery of Hollinwood’s fixture at Meltham in Division Five of the Pennine League.
The match finished all-square at 4-4, with both sides, along with spectators, relieved when the referee blew for full-time.
Hollinwood played up the slope in the first half and, in a excellent defensive show, restricted the hosts to a single try.
Confident of overturning the deficit in the second period, the visitors hit the ground running with a touch down from Tom Jeffrey.
They were now in the ascendancy, but with Meltham defending as if their lives depended on it, they were unable to add to to their score. In a supreme effort, Hollinwood were held up over the line on at least four occasions, but there was no way through as conditions deteriorated.
John Byram was again in fine form, dictating play alongside Paddy Jennings, while Pete Jackson, Rob Penswick and Ian Hunt put in some big hits.
Hollinwood will play Saddleworth Rangers in the first semi-final of the 2011 competition on Sunday (1pm kick-off). The game takes place at Fields New Road, Chadderton.
