HOCKEY: OLDHAM’S hockey team swept aside second-placed Manchester University 6-1 in a top-of-the-table clash in the Greater Manchester Women’s League Division One.
Louise Howard put Oldham in front by converting a lovely cross from Amanda Smith.
Captain Rachael Johnson soon doubled the advantage when she smashed in a deflection from a short corner.
Manchester had a player sin-binned at the start of the second half for a crude challenge on Karen Rowley, who dusted herself down and scored the resulting penalty flick.
Howard and Rowley popped up with another goal each and, after Manchester notched a consolation strike, Oldham’s Oona Cassidy rounded off the scoring to complete a fine team display.
Oldham’s second team lost 2-1 at Moss Park, with Lisa Staniland on target for the visitors.
The thirds beat Heaton 2-1 in the league courtesy of Deb Alcock and Jackie Sullivan strikes.
But they exited the All-Divisions Knock-out Plate third round after a 2-0 loss to Manchester University fifths.
