AMATEUR RUGBY: HOLLINWOOD'S hopes of reaching the Standard Cup final were dashed by Saddleworth Rangers, who came out on top in the last-four clash 54-10.

It leaves holders Rangers with another showpiece appearance against the winners of the forthcoming Folly Lane-versus-Higginshaw tie.

Shaun Robinson, Danny Adams, Danny Bowker and the outstanding Josh Brown were among the try scorers for Saddleworth against a Hollinwood outfit who refused to throw in the towel.

Ian Hunt scored in the first half for the home team, with Andy Gorey converting.

And Hollinwood's against-the-odds resolve was on display late on in the game when their man-of-the-match Peter Jackson crashed over the line.

James Brennan also played well for Rangers in a team made up of first and second-teamers, while for Hollinwood Mark Dixon showed a good turn of speed on his debut at full-back.

Before the game, a minute's silence was held in memory of teenage Fitton Hill Bulldogs player Alex Carter, who died suddenly at the weekend.

WATERHEAD will try again to get their first-round Carnegie Challenge Cup home tie with Egremont Rangers on this weekend, after the scheduled fixture succumbed to a frozen pitch.
Should they make it through to the next stage — something both Saddleworth Rangers and Oldham St Anne's couldn't manage — the Peach Road side will face either Wath Brow Hornets or Norland Sharks at home.
