Heyside 5, Savile Town 3
IN-FORM Heyside moved up to second place in Division Three of the Huddersfield and District League after victory over fellow promotion contenders Savile Town on the Royton and Crompton 3G.
Heyside looked every inch a promotion side — now just six points behind leaders Shelley, with a game in hand.
Driving rain made conditions unpleasant for both sides in a match that saw tit-for-tat goalscoring up until the last 10 minutes, when Heyside nosed ahead courtesy of a brace of goals.
And with a visit to lowly Paddock Rangers to come tomorrow, Heyside will be fancying their chances of putting more pressure on Shelley at the top.
John Norbury, who along with Mick Cummins manages Heyside, said: “I thought we played very well and although Savile got three goals it was more down to our sloppy defending rather than their creativity.
“We are very hopeful of getting promotion but it’s a very tight division at the moment and if you are off your game for a week or two then you can slip down the table.“We were inspired by James Taylor and Shaun Dean in central midfield and Carl Winstanley, who led the front line very well.
“We are very much on course to go up but it’s a simple matter of winning your games.”
James Taylor struck twice for Heyside inside the opening 20 minutes, but each time Savile’s response was swift and the visitors deserved to be level at the break.
Carl Winstanley made it 3-2 to Heyside nine minutes into the second half.
But the home side were pegged back as Savile levelled matters within 10 minutes. Heyside eventually put the game to bed with two late goals.
