RUGBY LEAGUE: OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ suffered a 50-22 defeat at the hands of Bold Miners in a North-West Counties League Division One.
With the scores level at 22-22 after an hour, Miners turned up the tempo to run in a further five touchdowns.
On the mark with tries for Saints were Jason Akeroyd, Rob Proudman, Michael Wallace and Martin Ryan, with Mark Lees adding three goals.
Division Three action saw Higginshaw surrender a commanding lead to eventually draw 18-18 with Langworthy Reds.
Higgy took the lead after 12 minutes through a Mark Ward try, which was converted by Jonathan Fullalove.
They continued to press and found themselves 10-0 up when Sean Stubbs broke away to touch down. Dave Sweeney failed to add extras in place of Fullalove, who went off with a fractured ankle.
Dane Armstrong crossed to increase the lead following good work from Gareth Franklin and Graham Crowther.
But their opponents hit back with a converted try and, just before the half-time whistle, went over again, to make it 14-12.
Higgy looked more comfortable when Stubbs added a second try, which was converted by Sweeney.
But a Langworthy winger ran the length of the pitch to help level matters.
In Division Four, Waterhead slipped to second-bottom after a 30-14 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Bamber Bridge.
The game between Saddleworth Rangers and Rochdale Cobras was off, because of an unfit pitch.
And the fixture involving hosts Cobras ‘A’, and Widnes West Bank ‘A’ also fell foul of the weather.
Hollinwood below par
HOLLINWOOD suffered a 16-0 defeat at the hands of Queensbury in Division Five of the Pennine League.
Heavy snow at Queensbury led to Hollinwood unexpectedly hosting the fixture.
But they never gained a foothold against their youthful visitors, who led 6-0 at the interval.
Pete Jackson did manage to force his way over the line after the break, but the referee ruled he had been tackled short of the line.
Hollinwood displayed a lack of organisation in attack, and fell further behind with time running out.
Jackson, Mark Dixon, who ran the ball well, and hard-working John Byram were the pick of the home side’s players.
