AMATEUR FOOTBALL:

UPPERMILL renew their bid for silverware tomorrow when they go to Bay Athletic in the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup quarter-final (1pm kick-off).

Simon Tait’s Huddersfield and District League Division One outfit, who emphatically knocked out Lower Hopton in the last round with a 5-1 victory, have a huge task on their hands if they are to seal a last-four spot.

Athletic are top of the West Riding Premier League, and are undefeated this season.

Tait said: “We are flying at the moment and full of confidence, although we will go into the game as underdogs.

“On current form we are hoping to put in a good performance and progress to the semi-finals where Knaresborough Town, currently top of the West Yorkshire League, await the winner of tomorrow’s game.”

The cup represents Uppermill’s best chance of glory this season, after an up-and-down league campaign so far.

They have been outshone to a certain extent by neighbours Diggle, who are firmly in the title hunt.

However, mitigating circumstances include a shocking run of bad weather during winter, which resulted in a string of matches being postponed.

Regardless of the outcome of the quarter-final, Tait has thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far.

“We have had a great cup run this season, the players have done very well,” he added.

“Hopefully we can give it a good go against Bay Athletic.”

GOING to the game? It’s at Canalside, Leeds Road, Huddersfield, HD2 1FF.
