Slick show stunner

RUGBY LEAGUE: HOLLINWOOD, playing fast, open rugby, stunned high-flying Slaithwaite Saracens ‘A’ in Division Five of the Pennine League.

The home side displayed a superb attitude to clinch an emphatic 30-12 win and rekindle hopes of promotion.

Hollinwood were good, and shocked their rivals with two excellent tries from winger Steve Hubbert after a series of slick passes.

Andy Gorey hit the upright with the first conversion attempt, but was successful with the other.

Peter Davies rounded off another fine move to touch down for Hollinwood, which Gorey again goaled before the leaders Slaithwaite went over for a converted try of their own to end the first half 16-6 in arrears.

The hosts were soon back in the ascendancy with Ian Hunt charging over to record his team’s fourth try. Gorey struck a post in attempting to add the extras.

Play became sloppy as both sides began to tire. Hollinwood threw the ball out wide at every opportunity, which resulted in several passes going to ground.

But the local outfit were still not done with as Rob Penswick and Liam Parker registered tries. Man-of-the-match Gorey converted one but, for a third time in the afternoon, clouted an upright with the other effort.

Brothers Chris and Kevin Collins, on debut, produced impressive shows, while Dave Hughes also performed well in his first appearance.

The win lifted Hollinwood up to fourth in the table, six points adrift of Slaithwaite.
