Uppermill heartache

UPPERMILL crashed out of the West Riding FA Challenge Cup at the quarter-final stage following a 4-3 loss to Bay Athletic, after extra-time.

It was a tremendous effort from Simon Tait’s side at Leeds Road, against a team yet to be beaten this term.

Athletic took the lead after four minutes, but Dave Taylor soon levelled matters for the underdogs, drilling home a penalty given for handball.

Uppermill went in front through Jake Jacobs, who smashed the ball in from 15 yards.

And just after the restart Jacobs latched on to Dave Rigby’s delivery to extend the lead.

But Athletic have remained unbeaten this long for a reason and found a way back into the tie.

Two goals in 10 minutes sent the game into extra-time, and Athletic notched the winner four minutes into the first period.

Tait also has his eyes on a strong finish to the Huddersfield and District League Division One campaign.

He added: ‘We are mid-table but have only played eight games due to the cup run, so hopefully we can kick on and embark on a bit of a run now.

“There is a chance we can secure a top-three finish.”

HEYSIDE earned a 3-0 win at Grange Moor in Division Three.

James Leonard put the visitors in front before the break.

He added another goal after the restart, prior to Jake Warburton joining him on the scoresheet
