Away-day joy in Roses duel
Date published: 09 March 2011
A REPRESENTATIVE team from the Oldham Amateur Snooker League, featuring two players under the age of 18, swept aside their Huddersfield League counterparts in a Roses challenge match.
The return fixture over the tops — the Red Rose outfit won the first meeting at home 6-1 — saw Oldham emerge victorious 7-3.
The visitors fielded teenagers Ryan Duffy and Ryan Hickman and, although both were beaten in the opening three frames, they look bright prospects.
Danny Reece put Oldham’s first frame on the board, before Graham Duffy levelled things up.
Mick Webb put the visitors 3-2 up with a typically clinical display, but Nick Broadbent was uncharacteristically off-colour as he slipped to defeat in frame six.
But it was all Oldham after that. Martin Merrington produced one of the performances of the day, with some sublime cueing and pinpoint cue-ball control.
Frame eight saw arguably Oldham’s best player, Danny Gleeson, take on the ex-professional Robert Reed.
And Gleeson did not disappoint, knocking in a superbly-crafted 50 break to stun the former pro.
Oldham’s second father and son duo, Mick and Dean Smith, then put the icing on the cake to take frames nine and 10.
Comrades back on top spot
COMRADES ‘A’ held their nerve to return to the head of the Saw-Tech Snooker League.
They overcame their ‘B’ team 4-2 in a match which featured three back-ball frames.
Comrades’ cause was aided by Cartshaft. They climbed to fourth place after sweeping aside Moss Inn, who were top, 5-1.
Cot’s unbeaten record wrecked by Deaf show
DEAF ‘B’ wrecked Little Cot ‘A’ team’s 13-match unbeaten run in the Pet Au Purrs Oldham Amateur Snooker League with a 4-2 win.
Dave Newton put Cot ahead, only for MJ Smith to pull a frame back.
Danny Reece then knocked in a break of 46 in his defeat of Martin Kennedy to put Deaf in front.
John Harland then added another frame for Deaf, before Steve Connell gained a valuable point for Cot in the last frame of the evening.
Despite a break of 41 from Oldham Boro’s Andy Pickup, he was unable to get the better of Russ White, of Blue Club ‘A’, in a 3-3 draw.
In a second v third clash, High Crompton Cons played host to Moss Inn ‘A’.
The match was understandably close, but Moss eventually secured a 4-2 success.
Pete Cunniffe (Moss Inn) defeated Darren Atkin thanks to a 38 break in the fourth frame, while team-mate John Keating overcame the dangerous Mick Webb in the final frame.
THERE is a delegates meeting at Chadderton Reform on Sunday (12.30pm).
