GOLF:

TWO members of Brookdale Golf Club, John Stansfield and Dave Harrison, swapped a sand wedge for sand paper and a driver for a screw driver to improve facilities at the Medlock Road course.

The pair gave up their free time to redecorate the office and reception and put in new cupboards and shelves at their own expense.

Chris Gleave, vice-captain in 2011, said: “This is an example of how golf clubs can tap in on the expertise of their members in these difficult times.

“John and Dave have given the club a big lift, and all off their own back.”

The board of directors have expressed their gratitude to the two men who have both been members for many years.Harper’s fourth-hole ace in vain

GRAHAM Harper hit a hole in one in the team Stableford event at Crompton and Royton.
But Harper’s efforts on the par three fourth, which measures 149 yards, were in vain.

Playing alongside Paul Harrison, Peter Meggison and Chris Roberts, the quartet had to settle for runners-up spot.

Victory by a four-point margin went to Andy Allen, John Haigh, Jack Bottomley-Clift, Jordan Abbott (90 pts).

Father and son Chris and Paul King, Landy Wild and Steve Bower were third on the day (85pts).

MARTIN Lewis won his very own captain’s drive-in at OLDHAM.

Lewis, Ian McGloughlin, vice-captain Barry Lewis and Steve Taylor accumulated 102 points to win the four-man team Stableford competition.
