AMATEUR FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL enjoyed a 2-1 win at Holmbridge in the Huddersfield and District League’s Barlow Cup.
On target for Simon Tait’s side were Nick Fitzpatrick and Dave Taylor.
The tie should have been played back in November, but was scuppered by the winter weather.
On a small, heavy pitch against a team doing well in Division Two this was potentially a tricky away tie for the in-form visitors.
Captain Bobby Greenwood almost put Tait’s troops in front after 10 minutes, but his powerful header flew just wide.
From a long ball a Holbridge striker clattered into Uppermill goalkeeper Alan Scorer and the ball made its way into the net. Despite the away side expecting a free-kick, the goal was given.
But Uppermill hit back when a James Mooney cross was handled in the box, and Taylor made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Taylor nearly capped a fine team move just after the restart, only to see his volley fly wide of the post. The winner arrived 15 minutes from time.
Andrew Cooney fed Fitzpatrick on the left wing, and he cut inside past two defenders before rifling home.
The winners of the tie will face Newsome.
Groom Cup action saw Heyside edge out Upperthong SC 2-1.

Steven Partington scored all four goals for Heyside.
AVRO slipped to second place in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division table, following a 3-1 reverse at Hindsford.
Phil Brown’s men find themselves two points behind Manchester Gregorians, although Avro do have two games in hand on their title rivals.
Stockport Georgians, who defeated basement boys Hollinwood 4-0, will fancy their chances of securing top spot come the end of the season. They are level on points with Avro, but with a match in hand.
Brown’s side travel to Georgians tomorrow.
The result leaves Fred Hardicre’s strugglers stranded on nine points at the foot of the table, six behind nearest side Prestwich Heys. Both sides have played 21 games.
