RUGBY UNION:

OLDHAM vets earned a 27-22 triumph at Bury thirds.

Mark Hodge gave the visitors an early lead with an unconverted try, breaking off a maul after a good surge from the pack.

Hodge added a second two minutes later, with Danny Simpson converting.

Bury came back with two breakaway touchdowns, both of which were converted.

But just before the interval Oldham replied through Matt Burgess in the corner. Simpson added the extras.

With 20 minutes remaining Bury crossed, and then added a penalty.

The game looked to be slipping away from Oldham but with two minutes to go, Simpson levelled matters with a penalty from 30 yards, before Hodge crossed to secure the win.

OLDHAM RU thirds were edged out 20-19 at Glossop thirds.

The visitors switched off early on, which allowed Glossop to break away and cross under the sticks, before converting.

But Oldham soon levelled matters, Jordan McEwan releasing Ryan North who charged over the line. Rhys Jones added the extras.

The away side then went in front, as McEwan shrugged off two challenges to touch down.

After the interval a Glossop winger intercepted the ball in his own 22 prior to racing down the wing and past Danny Smith and Lee Whitehead to cross.

Glossop broke for another touchdown, but Oldham heads did not drop and that man McEwan powered through to score following a scrum. Jones converted.

In the dying seconds Glossop were given a penalty and chose to go for goal. The ball hit the upright and bounced into the hands of Jake Watson, but the referee awarded another penalty for blocking.

Again the hosts went for goal, and this time they were successful to claim the spoils.Under-15s denied by forward power

OLDHAM RU under-15s slipped to a 24-7 defeat to Littleborough in the Lancashire Cup final at Wigan.

Littleborough took the lead after 20 minutes through an unconverted try, followed by a second touchdown. This time the conversion was successful.

Oldham captain Thad Kenny responded with a try, with Ellis Heliere-Catherall adding the extras to further reduce the deficit.

The local outfit started the second half showing plenty of commitment, and they could have levelled the scores but for a move breaking down within the Littleborough 22.

However, from that point Littleborough’s large forwards made life difficult in the scrum and ruck, allowing Oldham only limited ball.

Littleborough, in command, extended their lead without reply.
