Sluggish opening proves costly

RUGBY LEAGUE:
SADDLEWORTH Rangers went down 46-16 at National Conference League Premier Division front-runners Leigh East.
A poor opening to the game cost the visitors dear as East ran in 26 unanswered points. Paul Wilcock, Paul Rowley, Carl Redford and Jon Walker all scored tries with Adam Holland converting two of them.
Ryan Fieldhouse, on pro terms at Halifax, was next over before Holland’s conversion sparked a response.
Rangers prop Carl Field barged over and Liam Coates also went in, Michael Coates converting both as Keith Brennan’s side ended the opening period well despite being 26-12 behind.
But any hopes of a comeback were shattered when Jono Smith charged over, Holland adding the extras. Two Adrian Dootson tries added to the pain.
Adam Jeffrey pulled one back and the final quarter was even, but Rowley’s second try and Holland’s fifth goal maintained East’s standing at the top.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers are in NCL action tomorrow, with a home match against basement boys
Wigan St Jude’s (kick-off 7.30pm).
