THE excellent Chadderton Mill AC Winter League reaches its climax on Sunday.

It is anyone’s guess who will win the title as just a few points separate top two Graham Mitchell and Aiden Bordiak.

Without doubt, the hard work put in by Lee Humphries, Alan Shaw and others has turned what used to be a water which needed bloodworm to catch in the colder months to a venue that is as good as any commercial fishery in the North West.

FORMER Oldham angler and now Rochdale resident Pete Mottram showed his class by winning the Todmorden AS open match on Croft, where anglers were met with dry but cold conditions.

Opting for corn, he kept switching between the tip and pole to tempt half-a-dozen carp for 26lb.

Steve “Stan” Buckley was in second place, and again it was carp which made up his 20lb net on meat between the tip and pole. Third-best Simon Newsham was in the money again thanks to a couple of carp on the pole and pellet (14lb 4oz).

The next Todmorden AS trophy match is at Townhouse Fishing on Sunday. To book, telephone (01706) 374689 or 07543 883714.

There is also an open match on the Rochdale Canal, in the Rochdale area. For more details, contact Frank on 07769 905319 or (01706) 846581.

Todmorden AS memberships until December 31, 2011, are available over the counter at several shops, including Tight Lines (Shaw) and Rochdale Angling.

Prices are £5 for juniors (up to 16th birthday) and £17.50 for intermediates (16 to 18 years), OAPs and women. Senior memberships cost £45.

THE British record for a perch was smashed by a massive 6lb 2oz fish.

It was caught by specimen hunter Neil Stephen on a prawn hookbait float over chopped worm and prawns.

Ogden Reservoir is acquiring a reputation for big fish. The venue has produced a 22lb carp recently as well as a 25lb pike on deadbait. They would not look out of place anywhere in the North-West region.

Tickets for Ogden Reservoir are £5 on the bank and £4 at Tight Lines, Shaw.

SOME of the SADAS waters are starting to switch on, with Eagle Mill Dam producing some superb weights of bream and chub.

One catch consisted of half-a-dozen chub to more than two pounds and a bream around the same weight. Beth fell to double caster.

A FEW anglers are turning out on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Diggle.

With temperatures rising, skimmers, chub, bream and tench should start feeding anytime soon.

This section of the canal can produce excellent fishing, but it can also prove hard work.

Venue Guide

Huddersfield Narrow Canal: SADAS waters starting to produce. Chub and bream on pellet or red maggot.

Rochdale Canal: Rochdale area for roach and skimmers. Bread punch the best bait.
