GORDON LAMB
MEET THE NEW CLUB CAPTAINS: CROMPTON AND ROYTON
GOLF: GORDON Lamb insists his 12 months as club captain will be the highlight of his 24-year association with the club.
Gordon (62) said: “It was an honour to be president in 2001, but to be asked to be captain is even more of an honour and is something I have looked forward to since I was asked last year.”
Married to Marilyn for 42 years, the senior manufacturing engineer for BAE Systems is taking voluntary redundancy in September and will have more time to work on reducing his handicap from its current 18. The lowest he has played off is 15.
But it will be his efforts to make the club stronger which will take up most of his time as captain.
Gordon admits he is hoping to encourage an increase in membership at the club and, to that end, is delighted to see the junior section thriving under professional Mark Beatty and his assistant Karen Heywood.
And the creation of a new practice ground at the side of the 17th fairway should prove a strong selling point.
The social side of the club continues to thrive and the function room helps to net much-needed funds.
And Gordon – whose BAE work helps towards the construction of military aircraft – also hopes to raise money for a charity close to his heart.
The Help For Heroes appeal supports disabled servicemen and women returning from war zones and Gordon aims to raise as much money as possible with a one-day team event at Crompton and Royton in September.
