Gorey the great spurs Hollinwood

RUGBY: PROMOTION hopefuls Hollinwood produced another fine performance in a crushing 45-14 defeat of Meltham All Blacks in Division Five of the Pennine League.
The local side’s pack, led by Kevin Collins, once again dominated play, while the half-back pairing of Gareth Benias and Andy Gorey linked up well to give the backs plenty of chances to run with the ball.
Benias set the ball rolling with a try converted by man-of-the-match Gorey, who then went on to cross twice in quick succession. He also added the goals for good measure.
In-form Pete Jackson went over for Hollinwood’s fourth try of the afternoon — goaled by Gorey — as the hosts surged into a commanding lead.
There was still time before the interval for Gorey to take the total to 25 unanswered points courtesy of a drop goal.
Mike Richmond continued the onslaught just after the restart, bursting through through several tackles to score.
The visitors from West Yorkshire managed a converted try, but Hollinwood were soon back on the offensive with Warren Taylor racing in.
Gorey kicked the extras, before taking his tally of tries to four with a quickfire double. Along with six conversions and a drop goal, the former Oldham RL player put 29 points on the board.
Meltham did manage a second try, but they were well beaten on the day.
Hollinwood, who looked sharp with slick passing and good backing up, sit third in the table, two points adrift of second-placed Stainland Stags ‘A’ with two games in hand, and four behind pacesetters Slaithwaite Saracens ‘A’.
Hollinwood, who sit second in the Rugby Oldham Challenge table for 2010-11, entertain Brighouse Rangers ‘A’, from Division Six, in the last eight of the Pennine Supplementary Cup.
