Jacobs cracker caps win

ON TARGET . . . Uppermill’s Jake Jacobs.
FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL moved into the quarter-finals of the Huddersfield and District League’s Barlow Cup, courtesy of a 2-0 home victory at the expense of Hepworth United.
Both sides found it hard to pass the ball early on due to the windy conditions.
In the best move of the first half, Kristian Ventress fed Dave Taylor on the right with a pinpoint pass.
Taylor in turn found Jake Jacobs, whose clever flick was inches away from putting skipper Bobby Greenwood in on goal.
Playing into the wind, the hosts started strongly after the restart. They broke the deadlock after an hour. Andrew Cooney was felled in the penalty area and Taylor cooly despatched the resulting spot-kick. Three minutes later Simon Tait’s side doubled their lead.
Nick Fitzpatrick’s corner was flicked on by Greenwood, and Jacobs unleashed an unstoppable volley.
Hepworth threw an extra man up front, and it almost worked in the 72nd minute, only for Alan Scorer to produce a fine reflex save.
Ventress nearly put the icing on the cake in the dying moments of the tie, but his 25-yard effort fizzed past the post.
Uppermill host Newsome on Tuesday in the quarter-finals (5.30pm kick-off).
Division One action saw Diggle lose 2-0 to Newsome.
