TABLE TENNIS: OUR Lady’s ‘A’ are celebrating title success in Division Four of the Oldham Table Tennis League.
The team clinched top honours thanks to a 6-4 defeat of St Saviour’s ‘B’, for whom Jacob Reilly registered a superb treble.
In the race for promotion, Werneth ‘F’ swept aside basement boys Dobcross by a 9-1 scoreline, and Coppice held third-placed Coldhurst ‘D’ to a 5-5 draw.
Coppice duo Rob Ainsworth and Dave Winterbottom and Wayne Carter and Paul Cahill, of Coldhurst, recorded doubles.
Champions Glodwick, with a player down, experienced a second defeat of the season in Division One after they went down 6-4 to MC & MA.
In-form Tristran Swan was unbeaten in both singles and doubles for the victors.
Mike Pellowe, making his first appearance in Division One this season, produced an inspired performance for Werneth ‘B’ against Hollinwood ‘A’.
He won all three of his singles in the 5-5 draw, while Hollinwood youngster Paul King bagged a brace.
Fourth-placed Saddleworth overcame hosts Werneth ‘A’ 6-4.
Paul Cicchelli’s defeat of Werneth No.1 Darryl Meredith was tempered somewhat by his loss to an inspired Stuart Meredith.
In Division Two, Werneth ‘C’ posted a crucial 6-4 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Uppermill ‘A’.
Karen Hill’s treble was essential to Werneth’s win and, with one game to go, they are now in the driving seat in the race to go up.
Hyde YMCA ‘A’ are assured of the title following a 9-1 defeat of Hollinwood ‘D’.
Hollinwood ‘C’, in fourth, had a fine 9-1 over Unison ‘A’, for whom Oldham Closed Championship junior winner Andrew Tarpey recorded his side’s only only success.
The match also featured a win for fellow junior Callum Jones.
St Saviour’s clinched promotion and took a significant step towards the Division Three crown with their 7-3 win over Coldhurst ‘B’.
Brian Huskinson and Alex Reilly both scored trebles.
The Owls ‘B’ team’s promotion challenge faltered somewhat as they could only manage a 6-4 win over Uppermill ‘B’.
Richard Tamworth was unbeaten for Owls, while Stuart Hanson notched two good wins for Uppermill.
Saddleworth ‘B’ are now favourites for the runners-up spot after an 8-2 win over Gilders, for whom Martin Nicholls was outstanding in winning his side’s two matches.
