BOWLS: SPRINGBANK’S Alan Hodson is the undisputed king of the Chadderton Cot “carpet”.

Hodson, whose Inbev Winter Bowling League performances earned him the ‘A’ Division averages title for the second successive season, again demonstrated his prowess on the artificial surface by winning the league’s individual knock-out.

He began Sunday’s finals, played in sushine, rain and hailstones, by defeating his son Martin 21-13.

Steve Mellor succumbed 21-12 in the quarter-finals, while Barbara Cooper (21-14) was beaten in the semi-finals.

That set up a final showdown with home green man Bob Price who, despite receiving three chalks start, was dispatched 21-15.

Hopwood have been the in-form club since Christmas and they underlined their vast improvement by lifting the team knock-out trophy with a 59-points defeat of ‘A’ Division champions Springbank.

Receiving 10 start in the final, Hopwood raced into a 62-points lead after the first four jacks, winning each match – three to single figures.

There was no way back for Springbank, whose only winners were Alan Hodson and Matt O’Neill.

TONGE were surprise first-round casualties in the BCGBA World Team Championship at Irlam Steel.

Several of their big guns failed to fire as they lost 142-130 to Warwick and Worcester outfit King George V.

NIMBLE Nook and Tonge ace Darren Griffiths was beaten 21-19 by Sheffield’s Chris Brown in the final of the Gaghills BC Open in Rossendale.
