GOLF: NEW Saddleworth captain John Knight has set himself the target of attracting more members to the club.
John (51), an IT network architect from Dobcross, joined the club 20 years ago and has seen membership fluctuate during his time there.
With a number of challenges to test shot-making abilities and panoramic views of the Pennines and Saddleworth, the course still holds great appeal.
And John admitted: "I want to keep membership as buoyant as it has been recently. Right now we're at a decent level, but we'd like to attract another 20 or 30.”
With around 380 members, Saddleworth is currently one of the best-supported clubs in the area.
But John warned: "Golf membership is so fluid and nomadic, it is a challenge to prevent members from moving."
John, an 11 handicapper, lives with partner Stella and has three children – Paul (27), Lauren (21) and Adam (20).
As is tradition, he will be holding fund-raising functions throughout the year, including the Captain's charity day on September 25.
His chosen charity is the Oldham Cancer Support Centre, and he is hoping to raise as much as possible throughout his tenure.
The Captain's Invitation Day is on Saturday, and a few tee times are still available.
