BOWLS:

TONGE made a fine start to the defence of their Manchester Premier League title with a 13.5-3 (178-167) win at Sale XL.

Their outstanding performer was Darren Griffiths, who played superbly to defeat Noel Burrows 21-13.

ENTRIES continue to be accepted for this year’s Oldham Evening Chronicle Bowling Handicap.

For the first time since the competition was reduced to a field of 64, heats will be held at four venues on two nights.

That means there will be eight players vying for one finals-night place at each green.

Those venues will be Nimble Nook, Crompton, Delph and Royton on Fridays June 3 and June 10. Entrants will be drawn at the various venues and will pick their own number from the hat on the night.

No-one will be allowed to play at a green where he or she is a member.

The finals will be held at North Chadderton Social and Bowling Club on Saturday, July 9, when, for the first time, a dress code will be enforced.

Entry fee remains at £5 and places can be secured by sending details of your name, address, daytime phone number, club and team memberships and choice of date (preferred greens can’t be selected), with payment to Bob Nisbet at 22 Severn Road, Hollinwood, Oldham OL8 3RQ

LOCAL bowlers are invited to enter the 2011 Moorside Classic which has qualifying rounds on July 21, 22, 28 and 29, and August 4, 5, 11 and 12 (6.30pm).

The finals will be held on August 21(1.30pm).

Entry fee is £15 and winners of two games are guaranteed £30. The winner of the competition receives £700.

To enter, send a cheque for £15 (payable to Moorside Cricket and Bowling Club), choice of date and SAE to: Geoff Woolley, 115, Turf Pit Lane, Moorside, Oldham, OL4 2ND. Ring 0161 633 5325 or 07960 296125 before 9pm.
