Mossley boss goes

NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL:

MOSSLEY have parted company with manager Shaun Higgins after a dismal run of 10 defeats in the last 11 games.

The 42-year-old resigned after a board meeting yesterday afternoon.

The former Stalybridge Celtic reserve team boss was appointed in May last year as a replacement for John Flanagan, who stepped down a month earlier because of work commitments.

Mossley secretary Harry Hulmes said: “The directors of Mossley FC would like to place on record our thanks to Shaun, but unfortunately things haven’t worked out. We wish him well in the future.”

Despite a promising start to the season — Mossley only lost four of their opening 16 league and cup games under Higgins — recent results have proved disappointing.

With only one point from a possible 33 since February 19, the Lilywhites have slipped to 18th place in First Division North of the Evo-Stik League.

Former Woodley Sports manager Gareth McClelland has been appointed Higgins’ replacement on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.

Clelland and his assistant Eddy Haslam will take charge of tomorrow’s game, ironically at home to Woodley Sports, who are managed by former Mossley boss Chris Willcock.

Meanwhile, Mossley’s youth team defeated New Mills 2-1 in the final of the Manchester FA Youth Cup at Salford City last night.

“SEVEN cup finals” is how Chadderton boss Paul Buckley sees the last seven games of the season it he prepares his side for tomorrow’s short trip to Ashton Town in Division One of the Vodkat North-West Counties League.

“If we can get a maximum 21 points from our remaining games, I’m sure we’ll go up,” added Buckley, who is without John Rogers (hamstring) and Leon Melia (work commitments) for the local derby.
