GOLF: BROOKDALE swept aside neighbours Werneth in the first round of the Dunham Forest Trophy.
There were home wins for Gary Lever
(4 and 3), Matt Hampson (7 and 6), Charlie Clough (5 and 4), Pete Buckley (3 and 2) and Mark Riley (2 and 1).
Werneth’s only victory came from Adam Rowbotham (2 and 1), while professional James Matterson was two up with three to play against Tony Cuppello before the pair walked in with the match over.
Werneth had more joy in the City Class Manchester Alliance men’s foursomes when they used home
advantage to the full to defeat preliminary-round opponents Tunshill 6-1.
Wins came from John Yemm and Dave Whittingham (2 and 1), James Buckley and Glen Shaw (6 and 4), Shaun Rattigan and Ron Bowden (1 hole), John Barlow and Kevin Roberts (5 and 4), Liam Dwayre and Pete Hickey (4 and 3) and David Whaley and Derek Ashford (1 hole). Jonny Wilde and Mark Henshaw halved, but in this competition that result counts as a win for their opponents.
Stableford romp at Oldham
TONY Boyle and Clive Newton were in top form in a four-ball better-ball Stableford at OLDHAM, racking up 47 points to win comfortably.
The two Steves — Mills and Wagstaffe — were second on 44 points, beating Chris Bramhall and John Coleman on a card play-off.
A four-ball better-ball medal at the same course produced a three-way photo finish with Steve Rae and Terry Garrett (59) winning it on a card play-off from Lee Blainey and Paul Butler, and Graham Park and Dave Audley.
Yellow ball joy for Anne
ANNE Allen won a card play-off against runner-up Julie Ward to win Saddleworth’s
yellow ball Stableford competition. Both scored 39 points.
And the yellow ball team prize went to Jane Wild, Linda Newman and Barbara Shuttleworth after they amassed 40 Stableford points.
Smith bags junior prize
MICHAEL Smith, with a score of 99-36-63, won the junior captain’s drive-in at Crompton and Royton.
Runner-up Liam Marshall carded a round of 78-9-69, Matthew Toop (95-25-70) was third-best on the day and Martin Murphy (116-45-71) was fourth home.
Crompton and Royton professional Martin Beaty and his assistant Karen Heywood organised a competition for the club’s ‘kidz’ section.
The players, all aged under nine years, took displayed their embryonic skills on the practice hole.
Scott Taylor led the way (11 shots), followed by Josh O’Neill (15), Michael Tompkinson (16) and John Norbury and Harriet Jackson (18).
