GOLF: FOOTBALLER, pool ace, Athletic fanatic and dedicated golfer — new Werneth captain Quentin Cartwright has certainly packed more than most into his 55 years.

The operations manager for a major pubs and property company has been a member at Werneth for 11 years and is “very proud” to be captain and aiming to use his expertise for the benefit of the club.

He said: “I am hoping for a good year. We are having to think outside the box with regards to income streams and I am aiming to use my work background to drive up sales.

“Things seem to be going well so far with bar sales already up by 30-per-cent.”

Quentin, who was educated at Hulme Grammar School, has spent most of his working life in the brewing trade. He started with Oldham Brewery before moving on to Boddingtons, Greenalls and his current job.

He lives in Chadderton with long-term fiancee Tracy and has two sons, Ryan (29) and Ethan (12).

A talented footballer, Quentin played as a midfielder and later a central defender for various clubs in several of the top local leagues until hanging up his boots at the age of 43.

At that stage, he took up golf socially before joining Werneth and improving his game to reduce his handicap to its lowest mark of 11. He currently plays off 12.

During his football days, Quentin often dashed away from matches in which he played to watch his beloved Oldham Athletic for the last 15 minutes at Boundary Park.

He started supporting Athletic at the age of eight and remains a season-ticket holder.

Pool is another passion and he reached town-team standard. He still plays for the Wheatsheaf at Failsworth on Monday nights.

But his focus this year will be on the captaincy at Werneth, a course he describes as being in superb condition.

And he aims to raise money for breast cancer charity Link For Pink with ongoing events and a fund-raising night later in the year.
