ATHLETICS: Chris Newton beat the three-hour mark in his first Virgin London Marathon at the weekend — and claimed it was one of the hardest things he has ever done.
The Oldham and Royton Harrier, a former professional cyclist and Olympic medalist, crossed the line in two hours 58 minutes 52 seconds.
Harrier Dominic Kennerley clinched a personal best 3:18:20, and coach Pete Williams crossed in 3:48:55.
Paula Lashley came in at 4:24:15, followed by David Elliot (4:46:10) and Paul Taylor (5:10:57). Maggie Elliot recorded 5:46:15.
Two of Oldham’s young athletes represented the North-West in the mini-marathon, run over the last part of the marathon course.
In the under-15s section, in which Adam Howard claimed fifth-place in 15:37, while under-13s runner Christopher Brown was 18th in 17:06.
