CRICKET: WOODHOUSES CC skipper Mike Cassidy has paid tribute to bowler Manzoor Ellahi, who has returned to Pakistan after a successful stint with the Medlock Road outfit.
Ellahi, who won the Sky Sports' Cricket AM ‘Speed Gun Challenge’ last season for his fast right-arm delivery, came to the end of his student visa and headed home.
Woodhouses return to Lees Brewery Lancashire County League Division One action on Saturday, when they host Dukinfield.
Cassidy said: “It is a shame to lose Manzoor because he was fantastic for us.
“He wanted to stay and we were just as keen to keep him, but unfortunately the visa ran out and our hands were tied.”
Tasmanian paceman Luke Swards continues as overseas player, while opportunities have arisen for two of the club’s 16-year-olds.
Fast-medium bowler Callum Megram and Brian Sloan, an all-rounder, have been told to expect more first-team action.
Cassidy added: “It is basically the same squad as last season minus Manzoor, but with a bit more emphasis on the young players.
“Nick Doyle broke through last year and scored a lot of runs whenever he was called upon. He can play an even bigger part this time and is someone the youngsters can look up to.”
Cassidy is keen to add more silverware to the cabinet this term, having lifted the Walkden Cup last August with victory over Denton West at Medlock Road.
