AMATEUR FOOTBALL: TWO wins in a row have boosted Avro’s title bid in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division.
Phil Brown’s side held on for a 4-3 victory at Leigh Athletic despite the dismissal of Jordan Evans for shirt-pulling after 15 minutes.
On the mark for Avro were Paddy Garmory with two goals, Paul Armstrong and Mike Barnes-Dott.
And they followed it up with a 4-2 midweek triumph at the expense of Wythenshawe Amateurs.
Daniel Murray, who pounced twice, was joined on the scoresheet by Garmory and Jack Conway.
With three games remaining, Avro occupy second position in the table, two points behind leaders Manchester Greogrians but with a game in hand.
It means Brown’s side will clinch the title if they win all of their fixtures.
Avro face Old Alts tomorrow, before two games against basement boys Hollinwood.
Brown said: “We seem to be coming into some form at the business end of the season.
“Our problem not so long ago was that we were not scoring enough goals.
“We were playing well in games but were unable to kill off teams, and it comes back to haunt you.
“Now something seems to have clicked and we have got eight in the last two matches, which is a big boost for everyone in the squad.
“I have rotated the squad a bit to freshen it up for the run-in, and I think it is paying off.
“Our destiny is in our own hands.
“I have told the lads to aim for three wins but we must take each game as it comes.
“I am delighted with the way we are playing.”
Hollinwood went down to a 6-3 home defeat at the hands of Hindsford (see John Gilder’s Match of the Day).
MIDDLETON Colts have won the Rochdale and District Sunday League Physio Clinic First Division title courtesy of a 6-0 win over Italia.
Johnny Munson (two), Liam Smith and Tom Monks were among the goalscorers.
Crown and Shuttle beat Duke of Wellington 4-1 thanks to a Nick Preston hat-trick and Kyle Tucker’s solitary strike.
Cardinal Villa defeated Dog and Partridge (Oldham) 4-2.
In the League Cup quarter-finals, Midland Phoenix saw off Gardeners Arms 4-1.
On the mark were Chris Harris, Richard Helm, Simon Riley and Byron Milne.
North Star edged out FC Dale 2-1 through goals from Andrew Fulham and Paul Ashton.
Scott Highton replied for FC Dale.
