AMATEUR FOOTBALL: UPPERMILL’s dream night turned into a nightmare as they lost 4-1 to Bay Athletic in the Huddersfield and District FA Challenge Cup final at the Galpharm Stadium.

Simon Tait’s side produced a spirited performance against a side four levels up the FA pyramid and currently top of the West Riding League.

Kris Ventress kept Athletic’s defenders on their toes throughout the contest with some clever runs off the ball.

But against the run of play, Uppermill fell behind midway through the first period, after failing to deal with an in-swinging corner.

Athletic stepped up a gear after the restart and knocked the ball around with style and aplomb.

They doubled their advantage after an hour.

With 10 minutes remaining Uppermill were given hope when Mark Jackson scrambled the ball home from close range.

But, as they pressed for an equaliser, Athletic produced two goals in the dying minutes to earn a

flattering scoreline. The match came hot on the heels of Uppermill’s 1-1 home draw with Cumberworth in Division One.

HEYSIDE are through to the Groom Cup final after beating YMCA 2-1.
Second half goals from James Leonard and Ryan Barnes did the job, despite Heyside conceding from a late penalty.

DIGGLE went down to a 3-2 defeat at Britannia Sports in Division One.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, they got back on level terms through a Gareth Chew solo effort and Peter Jones’ stunning volley.

But a penalty in the 89th minute handed all three points to the home team.

However, Diggle ‘A’ cruised to a 4-0 triumph at home to Wooldale Wanderers in Reserves Division Two as they bid to retain their title.

Adam Fitzgerald mustered a hat-trick and Ian Kearns expertly netted from 40 yards.
